3 tips to keep you safe this New Year's weekend

Are you getting ready to head to your best friend's house for that rocking New Year's Eve party? Or are you heading to your cousin's for the beer and hot tub party he hosts every year?

No matter where you plan to wander, if you're going to be away from home this New Year's weekend, make sure that you do a little pre-trip and pre-party planning to keep yourself safer on the roads. You don't want to be on either end of a drunk driving accident.

Here are some tips to keep you safe:

Be aware of the "Sober or Slammer" campaign

South Carolina is taking a "no holds barred" approach to drunk driving right now. The Sober or Slammer campaign is exactly what it sounds like -- if you even smell slightly of alcohol and you get pulled over, you could end up in jail regardless of what a Breathalyzer says. Keep in mind that while there's a maximum legal limit that once you exceed equals automatic impairment, an officer can determine that you're a danger to yourself and others at lower amounts if you're making mistakes on the road.

Play it safe and don't start to celebrate until after you get to the party. If you're bringing your own spirits, put them in the trunk to avoid even the appearance of a problem.

Be ready for heavy traffic at just about any time of the day

Business travelers tend to hit the roads early (as soon as they can convince the boss -- who may be feeling generous thanks to holiday cheer -- to let them go) so the normal hours of low traffic don't apply.

Essentially, you need to be ready for traffic at any time -- which means staying alert and keeping yourself at a modest speed so you have time to stop if you hit a snarl.

Keep your eyes on the road

Distracted driving is a bigger and bigger problem all the time. Map your trip out ahead of time and put the GPS on voice so you don't have to fiddle with it mid-trip. If the phone is too much of a temptation, turn it off and toss it in the back seat.

If you stick to this advice, you'll likely come through the old year and into the new just fine.
